Apprenticeship Funding Rules 2025-2026
The Department for Education (DfE) has published the updated Apprenticeship Funding Rules for 2025 to 2026, bringing several important changes that will affect training providers, employers and apprentices
Key Updates
1. Minimum Duration Reduced
From August 1, 2025, the minimum apprenticeship duration drops to 8 months (previously 12).
2. Revised Off-the-Job Training Rules
There is no longer a requirement to extend programme length for part-time or zero-hour apprentices. Providers must ensure the programme is realistic — but it no longer has to be automatically longer.
3. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Where apprentices already have relevant experience or qualifications, providers must:
-
Reduce training time and costs accordingly
-
Apply a minimum 50% price reduction of the identified RPL percentage
4. Optional English & Maths for 19+ Learners
Apprentices aged 19+ will only study standalone English or maths if their employer agrees. This change removes a default burden from higher-level learners.
5. Learning Support & ELS Updates
Clarified rules around learning support claim eligibility and a simplified process for Exceptional Learning Support claims over £19,000 annually.
6. Assessment Plan Changes
Standards revised under the new Apprenticeship Assessment Principles must follow new guidance
These changes aim to modernise apprenticeships, streamline funding compliance and allow for more tailored, efficient programme delivery.
