What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship combines paid work with training, allowing individuals to gain skills, qualifications and real-world experience. It’s a practical, cost-effective way for businesses to build talent and for individuals to earn while they learn.

An Apprentice can be an existing member of your workforce or a new hire.

What is the benefit to my business?

An apprentice can
  • Boost productivity
  • Fill skills gaps
  • Aid succession planning
  • Boost staff retention

All SEATS provision and course information detailed on this site is subject to revision and updates and is intended as current outline guidance. SEATS will work with you and providers to ensure skills training is honed to employers' requirements as best as within the scope of qualification requirements, university degree approvals and national standards, including the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education apprenticeship Standards.

Apprenticeship durations are to the Gateway stage and end-point assessment may add varying additional time to final achievement dates depending on the Standard.

All Apprenticeships detailed are Levy applicable. Contact us for more information on how you might be able to utilise your Levy, acquire more or transfer it. If you are not a Levy paying employer we may be able to support you in accessing transferred Levy if a supply chain employer linked to a Levy paying employer. Non-Levy paying employers are still able to gain substantially funded fee discounts.

University courses including Apprenticeships are deliverable at various locations (including employer venues) or in online and blended formats by our network of partner providers subject to viability.

Qualification Maps

Qualification Journey

When it comes to education and career development, there are multiple pathways to success. Whether you choose an academic route or a vocational journey, there’s a qualification level to match all ambitions.
This qualification map highlights how learners can progress from entry-level qualifications all the way up to a master’s degree, including apprenticeships as an alternative to the traditional academic route.

The Two Learning Pathways

🔹 Academic Route – This follows a more traditional structure, starting with GCSEs, moving through A-Levels and leading to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. It’s ideal for those who prefer a structured, classroom-based learning experience.
🔹 Vocational Route – Designed for hands-on learners, this pathway includes qualifications such as HNCs and HNDs, offering practical skills that lead directly into the workplace. Apprenticeships fall under this category, allowing learners to earn while they learn and progress to higher levels, including degree Apprenticeships equivalent to a master’s degree.

How Apprenticeships Fit In
Apprenticeships provide a fantastic way to gain qualifications while working. You can start with an entry-level Apprenticeship and progress through advanced, higher and degree Apprenticeships - eventually achieving the equivalent of a university master’s degree, all while gaining valuable industry experience.
No matter your learning style or career aspirations, there’s a path that suits you. Whether you prefer hands-on experience through vocational training or a more academic approach, this qualification framework ensures that everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

What is Off-the-Job Training?

Off-the-job training (OTJ) is learning that takes place outside an apprentice’s day-to-day work duties and contributes to achieving their apprenticeship. This training happens during normal (contracted) working hours and must be directly relevant to the apprenticeship.

Off-the-job training can take place in various locations, including the workplace, off-site (e.g. in a classroom), or remotely via distance learning. It is the nature of the activity, not the location, that determines whether it counts towards the required 20% off-the-job training time.

This dedicated training time helps apprentices develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to complete their apprenticeship successfully. A wide range of activities can contribute, as long as they are relevant to the apprenticeship programme.

What Counts?

Off-the-job training is a statutory requirement for apprenticeships in England. It must take place during an apprentice’s paid working hours (excluding overtime) and focus on building the knowledge, skills, and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship agreement.

It is different from on-the-job training, which is training provided solely to help an apprentice perform their job role. On-the-job training does not count unless it directly aligns with the apprenticeship’s learning objectives.
